Two of our children finally arrived in Jakarta in December and we didn’t waste any time heading to Bali for the first part of their Christmas vacation! Our trip to the airport was their first real look at the Jakarta traffic. Yikes!

The first half of our vacation was to Seminyak, a very busy town in Bali with almost as much traffic as Jakarta! The draw of Seminyak is the consistent surf. Perfect conditions for beginning surfers! Sedona and Aidan went to surf camp for three days and it didn’t take long for them to get the hang of it!

On the last day of the kids’ surf camp, Michael and I went off on our own to do a little diving. We had three great dives with Neptune Scuba Diving in Nusa Penida (an island of the coast of Bali). Our dives included an amazing drift dive where we were dropped off by the boat and then we zoomed along with the current as we caught a quick view of all the beautiful coral and fish that live there. The boat picked us up where the current dropped us off! We also dove with the giant manta rays that live off the shore of Nusa Penida. They have about a 15 foot wingspan and are such gentle and amazing creatures!

The kids were in bed early every night trying to work off their jet lag, but we managed to spend a little time playing cards and hanging out at the pool bar every afternoon!

After Seminyak, we headed to Nusa Dua on the southern coast of Bali, to celebrate Christmas. We stayed at the Mulia, which had the most amazing buffets for Christmas eve and Christmas dinner! The dessert room was spectacular!

Of course, we didn’t spend all of our time eating! We also had a few nice, relaxing days by the pool and the beach.

One of the highlights of our trip was a day spent at the Uluwatu Temple and monkey forest. The Uluwatu Temple is one of six temples believed to be Bali’s spiritual pillars. It is perched on top of a steep cliff and the walk along the cliff to the temple is a beautiful path through the monkey forest. Hundreds of naughty monkeys live in this forest and go about their business grooming each other and stealing items from tourists! Luckily, we were warned ahead of time and held tight to our belongings. We witnessed glasses being snitched right off of someone’s head! The tourist was not pleased, but we heard they will trade the stolen items for a piece of fruit! The grey long-tailed macaques really are fun to watch in their natural habitat and the babies are adorable!

It’s not easy to get into the Christmas spirit on a warm, tropical island, but we suffered through! Stay tuned for part two of the kids’ trip to Indonesia: Enjoying a Vacation in Jakarta!
